I think a lot of trauma psychology and neuropsychology research can make us feel quite helpless at times, perhaps convincing us that this is all permanent. We’re stuck like this, F**ked essentially. But that’s not true. Reality is in a constant state of flux, fluidity, change. Our current state is the result of our previous state, ways, set and setting & we can change the destiny of our future state by changing our behaviours, the way we speak to ourselves, our daily habits, who we surround ourselves with & our environment. I mean Duuh! But someone actually practiced this on me, assuming that it would help my negative ruminations and flashbacks. Unaware, of the full symptomology, history or diagnostic understanding. There is a lack of understanding out there in regards to the fact that some people think visually, and auditory. NO THIS IS NOT PSYCHOSIS. It’s a way the mind works. It can be of great benefit, creating dance routines in your head etc. But when you’re feeling ungrounded, not present, or split between the external and internal realities visualisation methods are probably a no go. & if your students are having intrusive thoughts these can manifest as unwanted disturbing images occurring in visual meditation methods. YES, Meditation CAN BE BAD! The brains of those with CPTSD actually look different than those with PTSD, Our Insula’s have been shown to light up more. We are right there, with the traumas, processing them, visually there. If you have CPTSD/OCD/TDT This can make meditation difficult as we become addicted to the day dreaming state. Interoceptive meditation techniques may not be right for you because they are heady, interoceptive, introspective AND YOU’RE ALREADY DOING THIS IN EXCESS!!! Watch my next Video for more on this! Speaking to the soul, so we can love, honour and protect it. 🫢🏻🧘🏼‍β™€οΈπŸ™ Our ego is designed to protect the soul. Through trauma the development of the ego can be affected. From a fractured ego, to under developed ego structures. Our minds can quite literally become a battlefield of its own. We need our ego’s to protect us, warn us and defend us FROM REAL HARM. Trauma leaves an imprint on The Soul & our nervous system, our bodies, our minds are hardwired in such a way that they will warn us if and when work needs to be done. It is the very same structures that go haywire after trauma that can be used to teach the soul love, to show it we can protect it and develop the behaviours to demonstrate we can honour the needs of our own soul. None of this stuff happens over night. It quite literally is a lifestyle that you need to choose if you’ve been through extreme and prolonged trauma and want to integrate. It may sound all ‘hooo ha’ but actually it’s a lot of study and a lot of work. Start really small, have a hissy fit because none of it works, keep giving up and trying again. Finding The Perfect Expression of The Pose - This may change day to day, week by week, or as the seasons change. You don’t always need to be able to maintain a strong Vinyasa practice 24/7, 7 days a week all year round. The neural networks of the brain actually strengthen with variety. This includes variety of movement, music, food etc. Having the awareness to ‘lean into’ what feels good for you in the moment is honouring your mind, body and soul and you will only be rewarded for that. πŸ™ As opposed to forcing yourself into shapes that hurt your back, or comparing yourself to the person next to you who has a completely different shaped body & anatomy. What NOT to do when your Yoga Teacher cues, ‘Find your truest expression of the pose’. This does NOT mean, ‘I want to do this so I’m going to force myself to do this’. YES EXPERIMENT = FUN 🀩 FORCE = PAIN 😭 & we can take this concept, these ideas into our daily lives. Remember what I was talking about earlier on in the week in regard to building healthier habits? If it doesn’t feel right, if it feels forced, if it hurts, remove it, walk away from it, or try something else that does feel good for you in the moment. πŸ™ Maybe you can practice that specific variety or movement, socialisation, or food at a later date once you’ve built up your tolerance and practice. This is what we mean by YOUR full expression, it’s meeting your body and soul where you’re at NOW & then applying this to your daily life too. & essentially this is what it means to ‘Be embodied’. What is my Yoga teacher talking about? I can remember feeling quite confused about Yoga Asana Cues before I did my YTT. 🀸 It can feel quite contradictory to be told specific instructions of how to get into a pose. Only for your teacher to then suggests you, ‘Find the perfect expression’ of the pose. This is an invitation for you to explore where your body is at that day. For you to use the pose to its full capacity and explore moving, stretching, popping or deepening where it feels most comfortable for you to do so. 😌 Our guidance is a way of getting into the posture/asana creating a specific shape with the body that targets a certain area. For example in Pigeon pose we face the hips forward in order too target that area of the body but it doesn’t matter too much if your shin isn’t parallel. This flexibility can change over time. πŸ•°οΈ For me this area has become ‘less mobile’ over time & that’s okay. πŸ‘Œ 😌 #yogateachercues #yogateacherlanguage #onlineyogaclasses #whatismyyogateachersaying #claritywithwords
Projections & boundaries; As trauma survivors who are consciously integrating it’s important to listen to your inner being in these situations and be aware of what’s going on in the social dynamics. Is someone attempting to gain power and control over the room? Are they over powering or controlling the emotional environment? Maybe this comes from a place of needing to feel dominant or superior, being praised too much, or too little. It could be a need to feel needed, or a need to care for others because this makes them feel loved, it could be ignorance towards your situation, etc etc… Many, many reasons why people project onto individuals who are more traumatised than them. Trauma Integration & projections; People tend to project onto people who are more traumatised than them because they’re meeting you at their own depth. They might expect you to be less integrated than them, or less aware of your traumas because they’re meeting themselves in you and haven’t developed this self knowledge yet. This can be super dangerous because as individuals who have mild-moderate traumas project their blind spots onto you a very toxic ego dynamic can occur. Whereby you are used for them to gain power and control over the social dynamics. This can actually stem from an unconscious knowing within the individual that you are powerful. Breeding jealousy. People may then unconsciously create scenarios whereby you’re knocked down a peg so they can essentially go, ‘Haha told myself so’. Watch out for these kinds of dynamics with people. Your level of trauma does not determine your level of awareness or integration. Infact, those who have more innate self awareness are more likely to be integrating consciously regardless of the level of their trauma. I hope you’re enjoying this weeks videos. Living with long term pain should not dominate your life. Meaning being bed bound & having an ‘I cannot do X,Y,Z because of A,B,C’ mindset. Instead, if we shift our mindset to, ‘I need this food, this spiritual practice, this physical practice to maintain good health’ we begin to develop the daily mindset and habits that lead to a healthier lifestyle. I’ve see ln so many people with health conditions force themselves into toxic environments out of fear of missing out, only for it to affect their health in the long term. & guess what, you’re not actually missing out.
